Find Fifty, Make Fifty

On a fixed income, a hundred-dollar swing in a month is real money. Here is one honest way to find half of it and earn the other half — no hype involved.

On a fixed income, the math does not move much on its own.

The checks come in at the same size every month. So the question is not how to make the number bigger by wishing. It is what you can actually do with your own two hands.

Here is one approach that has two halves. Find fifty dollars. Then make fifty dollars. A hundred-dollar swing in a month, and neither half asks much of you.

Finding the first fifty.

Most of us are paying for things we forgot we signed up for. A streaming service watched once. An app that charged a free trial that quietly turned into a real one. A subscription that renewed in the night.

So sit down with last month’s bank or card statement. Read every line. Not the big ones you know about, the small recurring ones. The $9.99s. The $14.99s.

You will find some. Almost everyone does. Cancel the ones you do not use. That is your first fifty, and it shows up every single month from now on.

It is dull work. It is also the most reliable raise you will ever give yourself.

Making the second fifty.

Here is the part people miss. The same comfort you just used – logging in, reading a statement, clicking cancel without fear – is the exact starting point for earning a little online.

That is the whole secret. There is no special gift involved. The people earning a modest amount online are not smarter than you. They are just not afraid of the screen.

I am not going to promise you a fortune. Anyone who does is selling something. But a modest, honest fifty a month from doing small things online is well within reach for someone who can navigate a bank website. And you just proved you can.

Why both halves matter.

Fifty saved and fifty earned are not the same fifty.

The saved fifty is permanent and takes no ongoing effort. The earned fifty grows the muscle, the confidence, that leads to the next thing. One steadies the floor. The other opens a door.

Start with the statement this week. The found money is the easy half, and it pays for the time.

If this is your kind of thing, I write three times a week over at the newsletter.
