What Those Hotel Rooms Were Really About

I spent years on the road, looking for a way to come home. This is the honest version of how that search started.

I spent a lot of years on the road.

Work kept me traveling, and the nights in hotel rooms were long and quiet. After a while, the travel that once felt like a perk just felt like time away from home. Another airport. Another room that looked like the last one. Another late dinner by myself.

So in those quiet hours, I started looking for something. Not a hobby, exactly. I was after a way out. I wanted to build some kind of income online, something steady enough that one day I could stop getting on planes and just be home. That was the whole dream. Not to get rich. To come home.

I will be honest with you about how the search went at first. It went slow, and it went sideways more than once.

I bought courses. I followed the folks who seemed to have it figured out. I would try a thing, not see much happen, and set it down. Then a few weeks later I would pick it back up, sure I had just missed one piece. I did that more times than I would like to admit, in more hotel rooms than I can count.

Here is what I wish someone had told me back then. You do not get off the road in one leap. There is no single night where it all comes together and the income shows up. That is not how it works, and anyone who tells you different is selling something.

What actually works is slower and quieter than that. You start small. One thing. You get a little comfortable with it, and then you take the next step from there. Small step, then the next, then the next. It is not exciting to watch. But it is the only version I have ever seen actually hold.

That is really all I was doing in those rooms. Taking small steps, most of them clumsy, toward a life with less travel in it. It took a long while. But the steps added up in a way the big leaps never did.

So if you are sitting there wanting out of something, wanting a little more breathing room than your work leaves you, I understand the feeling more than you know. I cannot promise you fast. I can tell you that you start slow, and then you take it from there. That part is real.

If this is your kind of thing, I write three times a week over at the newsletter. No pressure. Just plain talk from someone who took the long way home.
